UV-B radiation does not penetrate as deeply into the skin, but is
energy-rich and is responsible for causing sunburn if insufficient protection
is present on the skin's surface.
UVA rays represent 98% of the total ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s
surface.
Although the deleterious effects of sunlight on skin and in particular UV
radiation have been recognized long ago, many adults and in particular teens
and those in their early twenties continue to ignore this. The problem is even
more complicated, because photoaging is protracted as it takes decades of sun
exposure before it becomes apparent in the form of wrinkles and uneven
pigmentation.
Studies conducted over the years indicate that the use of UVB filters in
conjunction with a UVA filter, can prevent skin damage and premature aging.
Furthermore, the use of the antioxidant vitamins E and C, along with after-sun
products containing the skin normalizing vitamin A derivatives and the
soothing D-panthenol can augment the performance of sun care and skin care
products and can play an important role in maintaining the youthful appearance
of skin.
