At ECS 2009, DSM NeoResins+ launched three new products from their high-end DECOVERY™ range which is now available on a fully commercialized basis.

Originally launched in 2008, the waterborne DECOVERY™ range comprises high-quality and performance resin products designed for decorative paints and coatings that exceed industry specifications on environmental and technical requirements for topcoats, stains and primers.

Two thixotropic products, Urathix® AT231 and Urathix® AT232 designed for topcoat formulations were introduced on a pre-commercial pilot basis to the market in 2008 and have received highly positive customer feedback. Extremely robust, they are the first thixothropic resins available with 80% solid content which means they can be added in unlimited amounts to formulations without exceeding the VOC limits of 300g/litre. This robust characteristic provides coatings manufacturers with enhanced freedom in their formulations and, as opposed to most competing products, the thixotropic behavior is not lost when water or solvent is added. Another practical benefit is that these products can be mixed into cold paint mixtures, allowing much more production freedom.

At ECS, the three new products showcased from the DECOVERY™ range were.

NeoPac® E-128 for interior and exterior decorative paints, topcoats and stains is a waterborne tribrid combining 3 different technologies to achieve the desired properties. NeoPac® E-128 allows a very good ‘open time’ – the time window during painting in which the painted surface can still be adjusted.

NeoPac® PU-480 is an ultra-high performance waterborne product for topcoats & stains that combines all the desired properties such as gloss, outdoor durability, hardness, flexibility and water resistance in one product.

NeoCryl® XK-30 is a so-called functional primer for decorative applications. Its key functionality is ‘stain locking’ which ensures that stains from for example nicotine or markers will not shine through the paint. In waterborne systems this was quite a challenge, which is now resolved with this product.

Following the successful pilot launch last year, all DECOVERY™ products are now being produced in commercial quantities with all supporting documentation.
