A client asked if we could find a new, more cost-effective route, including rapid scale-up production, to an (R)-mandelic acid derivative which is used as a key intermediate for a cardiovascular drug.
Here, the gene corresponding to a specific acid-resistant R-hydroxynitrile lyase enzyme from the almond tree was cloned and expressed in one of our yeast pluGbugs®. By directed enzyme modification the activity of the original enzyme was increased six-fold, which provided a cost effective synthesis route to our customer.
