Chirality

Finding economical solutions to the 'chiral challenge'

To better serve the increasing market demand for enantio- and diastereomerically pure chiral building blocks, DSM has created a portfolio of technologies aimed at generating '100% yield and 100% e.e.' concepts for producing chiral molecules. These challenges are being tackled in an integrated manner, whereby a combination of proprietary technologies is increasingly being used alongside the single competences (biocatalysis, homogeneous catalysis and oxidation) and diastereomeric resolution.

Applied chiral technologies

Examples of these integrated process concepts include: crystallization-induced asymmetric transformation (diastereomeric resolution combined with in-situ racemisation), dynamic kinetic resolution (combining stereo selective enzymes with in-situ homogeneous metal catalyzed racemisation), chirality transfer (efficient transfer of chirality from one chiral center to create a second chiral center) and Dutch Resolution. These processes have been developed on a laboratory scale, then scaled up (often in collaboration with the client) to a full industrial process.

An important class of molecules which is available with DSM’s Chiral Technologies are the unnatural amino acids and its derivatives.
