Officially launched at the JEC exhibition in April 2000, the Eurotinter has
been several years in the development and testing stage. The process
automatically pigments gelcoats to a vast number of pre-programmed colours,
utilising technology that has been successfully used by the paint industry for
many years. Due to the fact that the viscosity of gelcoat is considerably
higher than paint, the system had to be tailored and adjusted to our specific
needs. Therefore the pigments, carrier resins, and colour dispensing hardware
and software, all had to be designed to suit the application.
This was only possible through a close co-development programme between DSM
for the carrier resin, the dispensing equipment manufacturer, and the tinting
technology specialists; each a leading player in their own field. The
resulting Eurotinter machine has a capacity of 500-700 tonnes of product per
year.
Some 2400 different colour recipes are currently stored within the computer’s
database and new colours can even be uploaded to all Eurotinter machines via
direct modem connection from the Gelcoat development laboratories in Italy.
Almost the full range of RAL colours is available as are most British Standard
colours.
All coloured gelcoats in quantities with a maximum of 1000 kg are now produced
with Eurotinters. Till now,more than 1500 tons of coloured gelcoat has been
produced with this system, which has proofed to perform with a greater colour
accuracy and consistancy as what was ever expected during the start of the
project.
