Paste manufacturing

Bonding pastes and repair putties are produced with high-speed mixing and dispersion processes.

High concentrations of fillers are used in the formulations to compensate for the polymerisation shrinkage of UP-resins. These fillers can also serve other purposes, like making the paste lightweight or corrosion resistant. In some formulations glass fibres are mixed in to increase the strength of the joint.

Bonding pastes are applied to the substrates manually or by means of dosing equipment.

The choice of the resin and the formulation of the bonding paste for different applications is very important. Bonding pastes, used in the boat building industry must be able to absorb high shear forces. These bonding pastes often contain glass fibres as filler. In lightweight construction applications (e.g. sandwich constructions) bonding pastes with low density fillers, such as hollow glass spheres, are used. Other types of bonding pastes serve high temperature or corrosion resistant applications.

Large amounts of bonding pastes are used in the production of windmill rotor blades. These bonding pastes must have very good fatigue properties, for which reason vinyl ester resins are used as base resin.

Repair putties are used in the car repair industry or to smooth laminate surface structures in the boat building industry.

The resin, used in car repair putties must show an excellent adhesion to various substrates, like steel, galvanised steel and plastics like ABS and polypropylene
