Helmets

The extremely high strength and low weight of Dyneema® makes it ideal for use in helmets for military and law enforcement use. Dyneema® HB25 is the Dyneema® grade used for helmets, because of the excellent mechanical properties.

Advances in technology have only increased the weight of ancillary equipment, such as communication, night vision and laser equipment, on the helmets worn by soldiers or the police. Ideally, a helmet should weigh no more than approx. 1.5 kg, without any reduction in the level of protection provided. In fact, the protection level even has to be increased. Dyneema® HB25 makes this possible at very low helmet shell weights.

Dyneema® UD full composite helmets provide the highest degree of protection at less weight than alternative materials, against both flying shrapnel (V50 of up to 700 m/s for 1.1g FSP) and bullets (e.g. 9 mm, Tokarev and Makarov bullets).                            

Dyneema® HB25 helmets pass all international drop and shock tests. The simple addition of an outer finishing layer gives helmets made with Dyneema® a smooth, easy-to-paint surface.

To ensure maximum ballistic protection, a specially developed - deep draw method of production is used. With an average compression molding cycle time of 15 to 20 minutes, this results in a helmet with homogeneous thickness and ballistic performance over the whole surface of the helmet. Easy processing of helmets made with Dyneema® HB25 composite can be ensured if the helmet shape and the mold construction are developed in consultation with DSM Dyneema.
