Dyneema® UD is used to create vehicle armor panels with exceptional
properties. Successful applications include spall liners and armor panels for
military vehicles, police vehicles, VIP vehicles, transporters, aircraft,
ships, and helicopters. The Dyneema® grades used for vehicle armor are
Dyneema® HB2, HB25 and HB26.

Depending on the application and threat, panels made with Dyneema® can be used
for protection against:
-
The full range of ammunition defined in European Standard EN1522-1, from
commonly used handgun ammunition (e.g. Magnum bullets) to 9 mm Full Metal
Jacket bullets
-
Military ball ammunition, including AK47 mild steel core bullets
-
Antitank projectiles of up to 14.5 mm (in combination with a ceramic or steel
strike face)
-
Heavier, tank-penetrating projectiles (e.g. APDS kinetic energy projectiles
and shaped charge high-energy ammunition)
-
Mines
Panels made with Dyneema® offer excellent protection from multiple hits, angle
shots, and spall. Spall liners made with Dyneema® catch the generated spall
fragments, and the angle of the spall cone is significantly reduced,
decreasing damage considerably. Panels made with Dyneema® also have good
acoustic absorption properties.

 |
|
|
Panels made with Dyneema® are significantly lighter than conventional armor.
The panels used in police vehicles, for instance, weigh less than 5 kg/m2. For
higher-level threats than rifle ball ammunition, panels made with Dyneema®
with steel or ceramic strike faces can reduce areal density by 50-75% compared
to steel armor. Dyneema® UD therefore minimizes the negative effect armor can
have on a vehicle’s center of gravity, speed and maneuverability.
|
 |
|
|
Panels made with Dyneema® are not negatively affected by moisture or water,
and are highly resistant to chemicals and UV light, as well as meeting the
most commonly used standards of flame retardancy (e.g. FAR 25.853, DIN 4102
class B2, FMVSS 302), Dyneema® HB25 offers superior secondary properties,
including high and low temperature resistance and excellent ageing resistance.
|
 |
|
|
The slim, light and discrete panels made with Dyneema® require only minimal
adjustments to civil and police vehicles.

Processing requirements
Panels made with Dyneema® can be cut
using standard equipment, and can be given any shape, conforming to the
irregular contours of both large and small vehicles. Dyneema® HB25 offers some
processing advantages over Dyneema® HB2, including (in some cases) compression
molding without cooling before mold release, and easier production of items
with very complex shapes.
