The Swiss based healthcare group Roche and the Dutch life science products and performance materials company DSM announced today that DSM intends to acquire Roche’s Vitamins and Fine Chemicals Division. On the basis of the discussions to date, the two companies have reached basic agreement on price and payment terms and expect subsequently to conclude on an exclusive basis a contract on all terms of the transaction.

Koos Mencke, René Steeman and Jean Beugels of DSM N.V. in Heerlen, the Netherlands, will be recognized Sunday, 18 August, by the world’s largest scientific society for developing better processes and new applications for a super-strong fiber used in lightweight personal and vehicle armor. The DSM team will be honored as Heroes of Chemistry at the American Chemical Society’s 224th national meeting in Boston, along with chemists and chemical engineers from DuPont and Solutia Inc.

The first armored cockpit door to have been officially certified by the American FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) contains the super strong fiber Dyneema produced by DSM. Dyneema from DSM has been used in various protective applications for many years, but the fiber’s use in the civil aircraft industry is new.

Two DSM employees have won the New Venture 2002 award in a business plan contest for start-ups organized by De Baak, the management centre of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW). Their entry was a business plan for Purisoil, an innovative soil remediation technology. The award consists of a cash prize of EUR 25,000. The DSM Venturing & Business Development business group is currently working on the commercialization of this DSM invention. DSM expects to spin out the business concerned (Terreco) in the future.
