DSM, requested by the French COB (Commission des Operations de Bourse) to comment on the rumours, suggesting that DSM and BASF are preparing a bid on the shares of Rhodia, has the following reaction:

In the context of the implementation of its strategy 'Vision 2005' DSM is evaluating various options to reinforce its business portfolio. In that respect DSM has had and will have contacts with many companies.

DSM confirms that it has inquired about Aventis' position in regard of its shareholding in Rhodia. This contact has been of a preliminary and exploratory nature and did not result in any specific conclusions, not even regarding the basis for a negotiation. A further announcement will only be made if and when appropriate.

As has been published by Rhodia yesterday, there is currently no contact between DSM and Rhodia (neither with its management nor on Board level), nor has there been in recent months.
