Premi®Test antibiotic screening now possible on live animals

Premi®Test, DSM's antibiotic residue screening test that is already widely used to detect antimicrobial substances in fresh meat, fish and eggs, can now also be used to test animal urine. This means that farmers, breeders and veterinarians now have a quick and inexpensive way to reliably check the antibiotic level of livestock before sending them to the abattoir. In a world where growing concerns about consumer safety are leading to increasingly demanding international controls on meat and fast-food chains are emphasizing the fact that their meat is antibiotic-free, Premi®Test plays an important role in ensuring the quality of the food supply.

By enabling farmers to perform these important quality checks on live animals, in addition to the existing test done at a later stage on the meat, DSM effectively offers the industry a tool to guarantee the quality of meat throughout the supply chain. Farmers no longer have to wait until a valuable animal is dead before finding out if the meat is up to standard - they can test theire livestock at any time, at the farm itself! What's more, veterinarians carrying out quality inspections for government agencies can simply collect urine samples from farms and do the actual testing in their own practice, saving both time and money".

Externally validated by several European accredited institutes and government laboratories, Premi®Test requires no special laboratory equipment or training. The test is very easy to perform, and within four hours the result can be read by simply comparing colors.
