DSM values its business relationships and aims to cooperate closely with
partners in the supply chain and in full compliance with the REACH
legislation. DSM considers it a mutual responsibility of the supply chain to
manage risks posed by chemical substances.
Pre-registration: an important step
DSM completed the
pre-registration of nearly 1,400 substances. Pre-registration took place for
all substances produced or imported by DSM. Raw materials used by DSM needed
to be pre-registered by the partners up the supply chain. In October 2007 DSM
started an extensive program in order to achieve a pre-registration
confirmation of all suppliers. In order to guarantee security of supply to
customers DSM defined an appropriate mitigation approach for each supplier
that not reacted. Suppliers, who did not communicate their plans regarding
pre-registration in time, were classified as ‘non-REACH compliant’.
Information on safe use conditions
Companies are responsible
for the safe use of substances they supply. Substances classified as hazardous
must undergo a Chemical Safety Assessment (CSA) to determine the conditions
for safe use and to identify and exclude unsafe uses. To start the CSA the
uses of the substance must be known. The first step DSM takes in this process
is collecting information on uses in cooperation with selected customers and
with downstream users associations. In collecting information DSM will use the
guidance and tools provided by Cefic and downstream user associations. DSM
assumes that suppliers will use the same guidance and tools. DSM will be able
to provide any information to its suppliers from Q2-2009 onward.
