Pre-registration of substances manufactured or imported by DSM
From July 1 to December 1, 2008 all substances produced or imported by DSM are pre-registered. Between 2008 and 2018 these substances will be registered according to the REACH schedule for volume bands and hazard characteristics. In the exceptional case DSM decides not to register a certain product the regarding customers will be informed via the usual customer relations management.

Pre-registration of raw materials used by DSM
Raw materials used by DSM needed to be pre-registered by the partners up the supply chain. DSM asked all suppliers about their actions to pre-register and register these raw materials. Where necessary mitigating action took place to secure supply.

Authorisation
Substances of very high concern require authorisation under REACH. In DSM’s product portfolio the number of potential authorisation candidates is very limited. In case a DSM substance or an ingredient in the DSM product needs authorisation, the customers involved are consulted by the regular business contact. DSM follows the authorisation process (e.g. ‘candidate list’) and will take appropriate actions, where needed.

DSM’s innovation and research centers are continuously looking for alternatives that can replace the use of substances of very high concern in the value chains.

Safe use of chemicals
Products should be handled and used safely and do no harm the environment. Under REACH DSM will execute a Chemical Safety Assessment (CSA) for all substances that are produced or imported >10 ton per year when registered according to the phase in periods (2008-2018). In line with agreements made in the industry DSM will start consultation on uses with a limited number of selected key customers. Consultation will start approximately 1,5-2 years before the final registration date. This means that for substances identified as High Volume substance and substances of high concern, e.g. carcinogenic substances, the collection of information will start in the first half of 2009. After consultation with the key customers all customers will receive a complete list of supported uses. In case of omissions customers have the possibility to report these to DSM. The results of the CSA will be reported in a Chemical Safety Report (CSR) which is part of our substance registration dossier. A summary of the CSR describing the conditions for safe use will be communicated to our customers via our Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
