Again a ‘Pieken in de Delta’ project in which DSM Resolve participates has been granted

18 september 2009

We are pleased to announce that on Thursday September 10, the Egg Classification project has been granted for subsidy by the ‘Pieken in de Delta’ commission.
The main objective of this project is to classify eggs in order to discriminate between different egg laying regimens by using existing and new technologies in order to reduce the fraud of mislabeling eggs.

DSM Resolve’s contribution focuses on the use of analytical chemical techniques as a tool to detect changes in level of markers or properties of eggs that might give an indication of their laying regimen to control the truthfulness of the printed label. The idea is to discover measurable parameters of the egg that are highly correlated with the egg laying regimen and that give a unique fingerprint for egg classification. The ideal detection technique is one that is fast, shows high selectivity and measures the marker in a non-destructive way.

The project is executed by a consortium of nine parties:

-          Philips Research, dept. Biometrics en Applied Cryptology, both part of the Information and System Security group
-          DSM Resolve
-          MOBA, manufacturer of egg grading and egg packing machines.
-          NUOVO BV, manufacturer of egg printing systems for the marking and coding of eggs.
-          Beekhuis Computer Solutions B.V., an IT-company specialized in hardware and software research and development and dedicated to the development of OVOTRACK, a solution for traceability of eggs in an egg packing centre.
-          Omega Food BV, focused on producing, grading and packing fresh shell eggs.
-          Gebr. Van Beek BV, egg packing station for retailers and producer of liquid and dried egg products, which are used as food ingredients.
-          TNO Quality for Life, carries out research aimed at providing concrete solutions to problems encountered by industry and government bodies.
-          University of Twente, Distributed and Embedded Security group

The total budget of the project comprises 3.25 M€, of which 50% is financed by Ministry of Economic Affairs and ‘Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschapij’ (BOM). DSM Resolve’s budget amounts up to 420.000 €.
