Why might the properties of two polymers that are blended to make airbag
covers change during processing? A simple enough sounding question, but one
that raises all sorts of issues about the polymer chain. And there can be a
lot riding on the answer.
DSM Resolve works with product developers to understand why the properties of
the initial materials can change during processing. We investigate how the
polymers react with one another at molecular level and seek to understand how
this affects basic morphology. Our research process ultimately delivers the
ideal material for airbag covers.
This is extremely important for the customer, who rightly wants to know
exactly what the problem is, in order to be able to further adjust and develop
the product. The automotive industry needs materials of guaranteed quality and
reliability, as do the household appliance, construction and other industries.
That's the focus of our research, which we pursue via a mix of expertise and
technology.
Our in-house specialists in each field look for solutions in constant
consultation with each other and with the customer. And thanks to our wide
product knowledge and presence at DSM's research campus, we find them too.
