How do you run a chemical process safely? How do you protect your employees
from exposure to toxic chemicals or prevent a chemical reaction running out of
control? Questions like this raise a whole lot of issues, like the thorough
analysis of thermal hazards.
DSM Resolve offers that analysis as part of overall process safety. Toxicity
and other safety questions can be addressed in conjunction with other DSM
departments. The end result is a total package of safety measures.
We test countless products, evaluating reactions, examining structural
formulas and scrutinizing process conditions. If there is a danger of a
runaway reaction, we advise on how to avoid it. Sometimes it's very
straightforward, taking just a valve or bursting disk. On other occasions, the
recommendation can entail an entirely different production method.
Take the chemical company that wants to add a new product to its portfolio of
plastics additives. It needs to know at the outset whether production at its
existing plant would entail any risks. Can the plant operate safely? Are there
any environmental hazards? These are fundamental questions that, strangely,
don't always get asked. With who knows what consequences?
