Applications and products

DSM's activities are grouped into five clusters: Nutrition, Pharma, Performance Materials, Polymer Intermediates and Base Chemicals and Materials. Nutrition and Pharma are the clusters that are engaged in biotechnology.

• For its production DSM uses both classical and modern biotechnology.

These products are closely related: all of them are based on micro-organisms. Sometimes the micro-organisms themselves are the product, as with baker's yeast. In other cases, micro-organisms are used as producers of, for example, antibiotics.

DSM does not produce any genetically modified products. Although genetically modified micro-organisms are sometimes used in production, the end product is always identical to the natural product.
