DSM has been engaged in biotechnology for more than 130 years. Safety - for
the consumer, for the environment and for its employees - and quality are its
priorities. For both classical and
modern biotechnology the micro-organisms are cultured in sealed vessels
called fermentors. Except when the micro-organism itself is the product, as
with baker's yeast, no 'living' micro-organisms leave the factory. This method
is known as contained use. The micro-organisms that are used are also
'biologically contained', which means that they are much weaker than the
organism they are derived from and cannot survive in the wild.
