Safety

DSM has been engaged in biotechnology for more than 130 years. Safety - for the consumer, for the environment and for its employees - and quality are its priorities. For both classical and modern biotechnology the micro-organisms are cultured in sealed vessels called fermentors. Except when the micro-organism itself is the product, as with baker's yeast, no 'living' micro-organisms leave the factory. This method is known as contained use. The micro-organisms that are used are also 'biologically contained', which means that they are much weaker than the organism they are derived from and cannot survive in the wild.

Satety

For safety reasons DSM takes special care to destroy its micro-organisms after using them. Given the amount that the company has invested in the development of genetically modified organisms this is also important for competitive reasons.
