DSM produces a wide range of ingredients for foods, beverages and
pharmaceuticals which bring important benefits to consumers and patients

Since 1980, the company has utilized its skills in modern biotechnology* to
improve several of its fermentation-based processes. This technology enables
DSM to manufacture products to more precise specifications and to a higher
standard than traditional processes allow. Modern biotechnology enables
products to be manufactured with lower inputs of energy and raw materials, and
often at lower cost. In addition, modern biotechnology can be an essential
prerequisite for new products.
Applications of modern biotechnology in the medical field are generally
accepted. But consumers in many countries have been unsettled about its use in
foods. DSM recognises and respects these concerns, and has responded by always
