Kathy Malloy of DSM Pharmaceuticals in Greenville, NC (USA) wanted to resume
an earlier program dedicated to helping two "under-performing" schools near
her site. DSM employees were asked to volunteer their time to act as mentors
and lunchtime and reading buddies to help children in the schools to secure
adequate grades.
Several projects are being carried out. For Pitt County STARS (Strategic Total
Advancement of Rural Students) - which is an after-school program for
underprivileged children at a school about two miles from this DSM plant –
software was developed to help the children who desperately need extra
tutoring in reading and math. Mentoring programs called “Leaders for Lunch”
and “Girl Power” have been started at the Wellcome Middle School and the
Pactolus Elementary School. For more information, mail to
