Adopting schools

Kathy Malloy of DSM Pharmaceuticals in Greenville, NC (USA) wanted to resume an earlier program dedicated to helping two "under-performing" schools near her site. DSM employees were asked to volunteer their time to act as mentors and lunchtime and reading buddies to help children in the schools to secure adequate grades.

Several projects are being carried out. For Pitt County STARS (Strategic Total Advancement of Rural Students) - which is an after-school program for underprivileged children at a school about two miles from this DSM plant – software was developed to help the children who desperately need extra tutoring in reading and math. Mentoring programs called “Leaders for Lunch” and “Girl Power” have been started at the Wellcome Middle School and the Pactolus Elementary School.
