White Biotechnology
The Emerging Business Area of White Biotechnology will aim to fully exploit the potential that the use of biotechnology offers in terms of new products and cleaner and more cost-efficient industrial processes. Here, sustainability and profitability go hand in hand.

Highlights and achievements in 2007

• Six out of the nine environmental targets for 2010 are well on track. The other 3 targets need additional effort in order to be fully realized in 2010.
• The energy efficiency (energy consumption per unit of product) has improved by 4% since 2005.
• New technology has been installed in the nitric acid plants of DSM Agro that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by at least 1.5 million tons of CO2-equivalents, 15% of our total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
• The discharge of COD (oxidizable organic compounds) in wastewater was reduced by more than 50% due to improvements that were realized at DSM Fibre Intermediates Nanjing, China, DSM Food Specialties Seclin, France, and DSM Anti-Infectives Zhangjiakou, China.
