Cycling with the Blind

  • August 2003 in Geleen (the Netherlands)
  • Harrie Duisters (DSM Research)
Cycling

Harrie wanted to organize cycling tours for blind people on tandems with sighted pilots doing the steering. Organizations for the blind in the Netherlands were contacted and involved in this dream. It is well known that some blind people love to cycle, but only a few volunteers are available to accompany them on tandems.

The training

From May to August they had tandem cycling training sessions with these blind people in Limburg (the Netherlands). Finally these tandem groups of sighted and blind people joined the DSM Classic (a tour of 100 kilometers) on 30 August 2003 in Mechelen (Belgium).

Harrie is very positive about their performance during this event. They all enjoyed the tour! And that is what we dreamt of. So Harrie’s dream came true!
