Fevzi Çakmak High Shool in Beykoz

In Turkey, it is getting more difficult year by year to succeed in the university entrance exam.

The system runs as follows: All third grade high school students take the countrywide uniform university exam. The state defined a minimum level of points. If the points are below this level, the exam can be retaken the following year. If the points are above this limit, the student can choose a university for which the points qualify for. The higher your grade, the better your university. High school education by itself is not enough to succeed in the exam.

Therefore all students are urged to take additional weekend courses or private lessons specific to the exam. However, it is impossible for some students because of their family’s low income. In a neighbourhood of Istanbul, named “Beykoz”, families earn very little and do not have any means to support their children for their university education.

"We feel honoured and satisfied because of having supported those poor young people to have a better future. We think that our support made them feel that they are vital for our future and they are not alone and helpless", dreamer Nilgun Demir stated.
