Part of the ‘Improving Nutrition – Improving Lives’ partnership fosters
contacts between experts in the field and utilizes technical expertise to
stimulate multiple micronutrient fortification. DSM nutrition enhancement
provides the WFP with expertise and know-how and products in order to increase
micronutrients in the WFP food basket. The main target is to develop a
portfolio of different solutions for how to deliver nutrition. We strive for
formulations that can also be used in malaria stricken areas and implemented
among different populations.
These nutrition enhancement efforts take shape in the form of large
micronutrient projects such as in Nepal (1.5 million sachets for home
fortification), Bangladesh, Kenya (18 million sachets for 60.000 refugees).
DSM enhances the micronutrients portfolio with the use of corn soya blend, the
fortification of staple food and by incorporating sachets for home
fortification in the WFP food basket.
Working along these lines we have developed ‘MixMe’, a sachet containing a
day’s requirements of the essential vitamins and minerals in powder form,
which is easy to apply in the home environment, by adding it to the basic meal.
The development of the right formulation of these powders is challenging and
demands a lot of DSM knowledge and expertise. To be successful and meet all
expectations within this specific area, DSM needs to develop an optimal
formulation, an efficient packaging and an attractive design. These elements
provide a unique opportunity to combine activities and create positive
synergies across DSM.
