Expertise needed in CO2 emission legislation for cars
The EU is setting strict regulation for CO2 emission of passenger cars. Our materials can reduce friction and weight of cars – and ultimately reduce emissions. Now we need experts in this EU legislation to help us help the planet.
Does this sound like a project you could help with?
The challenge
The European Government has announced new legislation (EC Nr. 443/2009), which penalises manufacturers whose cars exceed certain levels of CO2 emissions.
At DSM, we provide materials – mainly engineering plastics – that serve the automotive industry and help make lighter, stronger more flexible and durable components. However, to be really effective we need to understand this upcoming legislation in greater detail.
We believe we can play an active role in ensuring that come 2015, passenger cars do not exceed the 120 gr/km limit set down by the EU; but we need to know more.
How will this penalty system be implemented? How precisely will it work out? Will it be likely to differ per local government? And how are the car manufacturers dealing with this legislation?
The solution
In essence, we are already well advanced in providing solutions for CO2 emissions in cars – and creating brighter lives for people and planet.
Our engineering plastics are increasingly used to reduce the weight in cars by replacing heavier and less durable metals in a range of applications from under-the-hood to airbags. For example, 10 years ago, a metal-based airbag weighed 3.2kg and took 12 separate processes to make. Today, the weight is a mere 1.2kg and it uses only 6 processes – thanks to our materials. And of course less weight means lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Now our focus is turning to new ways of reducing emissions. For example, lowering friction is another excellent way of lowering CO2 emissions; our Stanyl® material, for example, reduces the friction in a valve timing chain system of a combustion engine by 20% compared to alternative materials, resulting in up to 2 grams CO2/km emission reduction.
The offer
- Do you work at government level? We would love to meet people at both the European government and local government levels who know the details of this legislation (EC Nr. 443/2009).
- Are you a lobbyist? We’re also looking to make contact with lobbyists and groups. How are you influencing this legislation and where could it lead?
We know the technology. If you know the legislation let’s join forces to reduce CO2.
And naturally…we realize that valuable consultancy and expertise doesn’t come for free…
