How can we help?
Open innovation is a two-way street. So if you need help, we’d like to hear from you - whether you’re a commercial company, an academic institution or an individual.
Our expertise is incredibly broad. DSM is a leader in polymers, engineering plastics and other performance materials – aided hugely by our position as the world’s leading producer of caprolactam, the raw material need to make polymers. We do this across competencies including chemical engineering and processing. We’re also a major name in life sciences – from enzymes to vitamins to pharmaceuticals and biomedical. We’re fortunate to draw on the resources of engineers and scientists in 30-plus countries. Here are just some of the markets in which we’re active…
Electrical & electronics
“The breadth of electronic equipment devices will continue to boom in the years ahead – as will their functionality and sophistication. Electronics innovation represent an enormous opportunity for those with the smartest ideas.”
“That’s why we’re developing components that provide increased miniaturization (smaller), ‘thinovation’ (slimmer) and better integration – reducing the number of components. LDS is one of the technologies that should inspire you to reconsider your electronic component or (sub)system, For example, around 30% of all high-temperature connectors and sockets are made with DSM materials, via lead-free assembly - and they’re completely halogen-free.”
Paul Potters, New Business Development Manager
Packaging
“The world’s brands are constantly improving consumers’ desires for safe, user-friendly and attractive packaging that significantly reduces the impact to the environment. Right now we’re helping them with packaging innovation through some really interesting products.”
“For example we’ve been instrumental in developing food packaging to prepare a juicy chicken meal. A frozen chicken, packaged in our material can go directly from fridge to oven and the result is delicious. It’s the result of a successful cross-industry collaboration. - but of course, we’re always hungry to do more.”
Paul van den Heuvel, product & application developer
Sports and Leisure and Consumer Goods
“From skiing to sailing to bobsleighing and golf balls, to next-generation athletic clothing, we’re doing lots of things to support sport and leisure – and help make people’s lives a little brighter.”
“For example, our breakthrough monolithic material Arnitel® VT is used in the very latest athletic clothing and uniforms because it provides good breathability and resistance to water while being 100% halogen free. Compared with PTFE Arnitel’s carbon footprint is 60 times lower. As you’ll see from looking at our ongoing projects, we’re striving to develop this technology much further.”
Pascal Tijssen, Application Development Manager
Furniture
“If any single word summarizes the evolution of the furniture industry it’s ‘bright’.”
“Everyone wants sustainable processes and materials that result in comfortable, beautiful furniture that lasts. To do it, partnerships and open innovation will be critical for us.”
“For example, our Akulon® polyamide is now used for office furniture structural components like chair arms, seats, backs and bases. It’s been certified ‘cradle-to-cradle’ by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency, which means it’s a really green product. Not surprisingly, we want to produce more products like it.”
