In occasion of the exhibition “D&D: Donne & Design” organised by Ileana Gobbo
and dedicated to female designers, Italian designer Donata Paruccini will
present her own glimpse of the future. Paruccini's design for the dish “Bolle”
was created for the "Made in China" collection of "The Future of
Manufacturing" (presented at the 2003 Milan Furniture Show); its shape
encompasses the future trends of design, influenced by cultural fusions and by
high-tech production methods.
“Made in Italy” design and innovative manufacturing are mirrored in the
cultural and technological mix of the "Made in China" collection, offering new
and unexpected sensations.
“Bolle”, invoking the sensation of soap bubbles, was made using the
stereolithography material Somos WaterShed™, one of the latest innovations
developed for existing Solid Imaging technologies. With its appearance of
frosted glass, "Bolle" transports into the present a future world, in which
project personalisation is a reality, and mass production techniques no longer
represent a prerogative to design.
Manipulation of the computer CAD information and the following production of
"bolle" were entrusted to ISRIM (Superior Institute of Research and Training
on Advanced Materials and Technologies, www.isrim.it of Terni, Italy). ISRIM,
leaders in the field of applied research, understood how to demonstrate the
added value of WaterShed™, and to lead the project from the conceptual phase,
to production and to the artisan finishing of "bolle".
DSM Somos (Delaware, USA), technological leader in advanced materials for
rapid prototyping, is a strategic business unit of DSM Desotech – one of the
top manufacturers of light-sensitive materials. DSM, a world-scale company
operating in the field of products originating from life sciences and of
high-performance materials and chemicals, is based in the Netherlands. In 2000
its sales figure reached about 8.1 billion Euros and it has a workforce of
22,000 employees at its over 200 sites worldwide.

What is stereolithography?
Stereolithography (SL) permits the rapid creation of 3D pieces utilizing a
computer controlled laser that polymerizes light-sensitive resins. The process
is highly precise and constructs the design in a series of "additive layers",
providing the advantage of obtaining highly complex forms unrealizable using
subtractive or traditional moulding techniques. The evolution of advanced SL
materials aspires at offering a viable production technique, beyond the
materialization of a prototype.
DSM Somos ProtoFunctional resins for stereolithography
ProtoFunctional resins provide advanced technology to respond to the changing
needs of new product development and industrial design. In 2003, DSM Somos
announced ProtoTool™ ceramic-filled resins, the first member belonging to the
new ACT-SL™ technology and the result of a significant research and
development program. Traditional non-composite ProtoFunctional materials by
DSM Somos satisfy a varying range of characteristics: transparency, superior
humidity / heat resistance, and demanding mechanical properties replicating
many production grade plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS and
PBT.
DSM Somos is also the first manufacturer of powder elastomeric polymer (Somos
201) that can be sintered (SLS) to produce highly flexible, "rubber like"
parts.
Technical data on all Somos materials may be found in the "Downloads" area at
www.dsmsomos.com.
DSM Somos, focused on innovative rapid prototyping materials, is a division of
DSM Desotech, a world leader in the development of UV curable materials, and a
member of the global DSM family.
DSM is active worldwide in life science products, performance materials and
industrial chemicals. The group has annual sales (pro forma including the
recently acquired DNP business) of around EUR 8 billion and employs about
25,500 people across the world. DSM ranks among the global leaders in many of
its fields. More information about DSM can be found at www.dsm.com.
