Topcoats

As legislation on the emission of organic solvents gets tougher, it places extra constraints on topcoat performance, creating a new opportunity for even more advanced solutions in many applications.

Typical examples of performance constraints in waterborne topcoats are flow, open time, gloss and body. Also for high solids topcoats increasingly tougher legislation imposes particularly heavy constraints on the performance of the high solids topcoats, for example, on their drying behavior. DSM NeoResins+  offers a wide product portfolio of technical solutions for the Decorative paint market: The Uradil®, NeoCryl®, NeoPac® and Uralac®.

DECOVERY™ solutions go further…

The DSM NeoResins+ DECOVERY™ family goes beyond current legislation on solvent emissions and focuses on the application properties demanded by professional painters.

The NeoPac® PU480 is an ideal DECOVERY™ topcoat solution. The NeoPac® PU480 combines gloss with the best durability performance. Its good properties for topcoats include its surface hardness, flexibility and water resistance. NeoPac® PU480 has good adhesion to old alkyd paints, important for renovation purposes, and it can be formulated in paints with a limited VOC content of just 50g/l.

The NeoPac® E-128 has good topcoat properties including surface hardness, flexibility and water resistance. Key parameters for a high performance topcoat include open time, low yellowing, no cissing and good flow. NeoPac® E-128 also has good wet adhesion to old alkyd paints, important for renovation purposes.

The DECOVERY(tm) family also include high performance, high solids thixotropic air drying hybrane® resins, Urathix® AT231 Q-80 and Urathix® AT232 Q-80.
These two thixotropic resins are uniquely designed to help you reach the performance challenges for compliant topcoats. Going beyond the current performance standards of compliant high solids topcoat solutions, the Urathix® AT231 and Urathix® AT232 make it easy to formulate highly structured/ thixotropic or non-drip paint formulations. With 80% solid content, these resins give you great flexibility in your formulations, while retaining excellent drying characteristics and not compromising on hardness development.

Our Urathix AT231 Q-80 and Urathix AT232 Q-80 are the first thixotropic resins in the decorative market with 80% solids! This gives you, as paint formulator, the advantage to add these thixotropic resins to an unlimited amount, without exceeding the VOC2010 limits. The other advantages of both Urathix® AT231 Q-80 and Urathix® AT232 Q-80 are:

- suitable for hot post addition to a cold mill base
- excellent balance between thixotropy and flow
- thixotropic structure resistant against polar solvents like water, propylene glycol, universal colorants and ethanol
- addition of up to 10% water possible, without negative impact on properties like gloss, structure, stability or flow.
