Today’s trend toward the replacement of in-feed antibiotic growth promoters has driven research activities to develop the potential of alternative feed additives such as organic acids, essential oils and probiotics grouped under the Eubiotic portfolio of DSM Nutritional Products.

Growth and maintaining health are two main tasks in animal production. It is therefore important to maintain a well balanced micro-flora (called Eubiosis) in the gastrointestinal tract of livestock animals to optimize nutrient absorption. VevoVitall®
VevoVitall® is an ultra-pure grade of benzoic acid developed by DSM specifically for use as a feed additive in pigs. It acts as a modulator of the intestinal gut flora maintaining a stable and healthy condition. Especially the presence of Salmonella is significantly reduced throughout the entire small intestine by adding VevoVitall®. It ultimately leads to improved nutrient utilization and an enhanced growth rate of pigs and piglets. Moreover, the addition of VevoVitall® to the pig diet reduces the ammonia emission from pig barns with a positive impact on the environment and animal welfare.

CRINA® products
Already in 1980, pioneering researchers from CRINA® recognized the huge potential role essential oils could play as digestive stimulants in livestock production. Following extensive research, a range of precisely formulated and consistent blends of essential oil compounds of high purity, marketed under the CRINA® trademark, was developed for targeted animal species. In monogastric animals, CRINA® stimulates the production of endogenous enzymes. Feed digestion is thus enhanced and less substrate is available for gut fermentation. The micro-flora is positively modulated, resulting in a reduced risk of enteric disease. In ruminants CRINA® improves rumen fermentation, a key for animal productivity, health and longevity.

CYLACTIN®
One of the most remarkable probiotics is the lactic acid producing strain Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415. This probiotic containing product is marketed by DSM Nutritional Products under the brand name CYLACTIN®. Through rapid metabolic activity in the intestine it acts as a stabilizer of gut micro-flora and limits the growth of pathogens especially in young animals. Systematic stabilization of gut flora helps to prevent stress-related disorders. In a number of trials CYLACTIN® has shown to increase the growth rate and to reduce mortality in calves, piglets and broilers.
