Rate of amino acid absorption

Research performed in the 1970s and ‘80s showed that amino acids from di- and tripeptides are absorbed faster than free amino acids or amino acids from peptides consisting of four or more amino acids. Because PeptoPro® is specifically designed to contain mainly di- and tripeptides, there are several reasons why it is the ideal source of protein during and after exercise.

The rate at which amino acids are absorbed is essential for there to be a significant effect on muscle protein re-synthesis. There appears to be a short “critical anabolic window of opportunity” to induce protein synthesis after amino acids become available. The limited time frame of around 90 – 120 minutes calls for rapid absorption of amino acids to make them available to the muscles as fast as possible.

Another reason why active individuals need a fast and readily available supply of amino acids is that digestive capacity is hampered during exercise. Blood flow to “digestive organs” - the stomach, gut, and liver - is reduced to a fraction of the flow during rest. The absorption of sugars and electrolytes is reduced by 50 – 80% while performing a moderate level of exercise. Yet another strong argument for supplying nutrients which can be easily and quickly absorbed.
