Medal tally
Sunday, August 17. After 9 competition days, the Chinese team is still leading the medal tally with 35 gold, followed by 19 gold medals of the USA. The Olympic team from Switzerland, another core country of DSM, has 2 gold medals and 3 silver so far. Today it was also a good day for the Dutch team with one gold and two silver medals, bringing the total Dutch score to 10 medals. In the weekend bronze has been guaranteed by the Dutch 470 sailors, Marcelien and Lobke. The medal race takes place on Monday 18 August. At the moment Sven and Kalle are placed 2nd.
Ruben Houkes visits the Vitality Campus
Sunday, August 17. Dutch Judoka Ruben Houkes, winner of the bronze medal during the Beijing Games, visited the Vitality Campus today. He expressed his appreciation for DSM's new Drinking Device and, like many others, left a quote on the Wall of Fame.
Tong Wen wins Gold!
Friday, August 15. World champion and famous Chinese Judoka, Tong Wen was honored with a precious gold medal after defeating her rival in the women’s over-78 kg class. DSM is the sponsor of Tong Wen and other top athletes from the Chinese National Female Judo Team, and DSM employees have long been following the progress of these athletes. Tong Wen is very happy about wining the medal: “We feel deeply honored and proud to win the Olympic gold medal here in our motherland. The medal reflects the tireless work of our coaches and trainers, the support of the General Administration of Sport in China, Tianjin Sports Bureau and the Chinese Judo Association and the support and encouragement from DSM. I will continue to enhance my level to maintain our country’s progress in the heavier category of women’s Judo.”
China in the lead
Thursday, August 14. Host country China currently leads the Olympic medal tally with an amazing 21 Golden medals and 33 in total. For DSM’s international Unlimited Sports Team Dutch swimmer Marleen Veldhuis has won a gold medal with her team and we count on Chinese judoka Tong Wen for another medal tomorrow(!) US beach volleyball players Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh qualified for the final 16 and the other teams are all well underway to qualify for the next round. Unfortunately, the Swiss fencers did not manage to qualify for the finals. Both Michael Kauter and Sophie Lamon did however make it to the final 16 in the international elite field.
Vitality Campus popular among visitors HHH
Wednesday August 13. Also today, the Vitality Campus attracted a lot of visitors to the Holland Heineken House. Visitors can ride the virtual Olympic cycling track among other things, and are informed about DSM's innovations in nutrition. Furthermore, in a special Vitality passport they write down some physical data such as lung volume and body mass index, and compare these with the top athletes. So far hockey goalie Guus Vogels seems to have the biggest lung volume! For more information, visit www.vitalitycampus.nl .
Cooling water
Tuesday, August 12. After a warm start to the Olympic Games, with temperatures up to 35 degrees, the weather changed dramatically during the weekend. On Sunday Beijing was covered with rain clouds. A cloudburst above the soccer fields in Tianjin, followed by thundershowers in Beijing caused several event cancellations and led to a Wimbledon like feeling at the tennis courts. The supporters remained optimistic… knowing that the rain would provide welcome cooling! So far they looked with envy at the athletes using the DSM made cool vests(!) Today, the blue sky is back. Temperatures are expected to quickly rise again…
Good start for 470 sailors
Monday,11 August (Qingdao). The Dutch 470 team Marcelien de Koning and Lobke Berkhout made a good start in Qingdao. Today, on their first day they sailed two races. In the first Olympic race Marcelien and Lobke crossed the finish line as the third boat. They won the second race! Marcelien and Lobke are members of DSM’s Unlimited Sports Team.
