Chicago bids for 2016 Olympics

With DSM's help a 3D model of Chicago was unveiled early June in support of the city's 2016 Olympic bid. The 1,000 plus building model is the first scale model of an American city to be made using stereolithography-based rapid prototyping. The technique allows 2D images to be converted into 3D models and quickly delivers prototypes with higher resolution results in less time than using conventional methods. The objects, in this example buildings, are made of resins. The technique is also used for the creation of prototypes in the automotive industry (including Formula One), biomedical materials, mobile phones and computers.

DSM Desotech, a leader in the field of high performance stereolithography resins, donated the SOMOS® resins for the 800ft² model to the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

Ambassadors Vancouver presented

Six athletes representing different sports disciplines have been appointed as ambassadors for the Dutch Olympic and Paralympic team for Vancouver 2010. In the run up to and during the Wintergames, they will act as a link between the athletes and the Chef de Mission. In addition, they will be employed for promotional purposes of NOC*NSF and its Partners in Sport, including DSM.

The team, which was presented in Papendal on May 8, is composed of:

  • Nicolien Sauerbreij (snowboarding)
  • Sybren Jansma (bobsledding)
  • Annette Gerritsen (long distance speed skating)
  • Annita van Doorn (short track speed skating)
  • Erben Wennemars (long distance speed skating)
  • Kees-Jan van der Klooster (sit skiing)

The latter is the special representative of the Dutch Paralympic Team. The other athletes represent the Dutch Olympic Team. However, since the final qualifications will only be known shortly before the Games, NOC*NSF has chosen to use the ambassadors as representatives of both teams. By following these athletes NOC*NSF aims to make the Road to Vancouver visible for the Dutch public.

The team is a mix of different sports and is a good reflection of the team that will represent the Netherlands in Vancouver under supervision of Chefs de Mission Henk Gemser (Olympic) and André Cats (Paralympic).

Vancouver ready in time for the Games

Vancouver is well on course to host the Olympic Winter Games of 2010. This is the conclusion of Jeroen Bijl, Head Top Sport Development of NOC*NSF (Dutch Olympic Committee), after his visit to the Canadian city in February 2009 together with Team Chief Henk Gemser. 'All of the venues are ready and look fantastic. Several successful test events have been organized, like the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships and World Cup events in a number of other sports. Furthermore, we have a very positive impression of the local organization at these events,' Bijl stated in a recent article in Lopend Vuur, the newspaper of the Dutch top sport community.

The Organizing Committee’s (VANOC) efforts to manage the social, economic and environmental impacts and opportunities associated with convening an Olympic Games were recently rewarded with a special commendation in a North American competition for corporate sustainability reports.

During the Olympic pre-trip of NOC*NSF in March, delegations from DSM and the other Partners and Suppliers were invited to witness and experience the preparations, facilities, and logistics in Vancouver and the surrounding venues. Vancouver will host more than 5,500 athletes and officials during the Winter Games, as well as some 10,000 journalists. More than 80 countries willcompete for 258 medals in fifteen different sports from 12 to 28 February 2010.

One year to go to Vancouver!

Thursday 12 February 2009 - Today it is exactly one year until the Olympic Winter Games of Vancouver will start. As Partner in Sport of NOC*NSF, DSM is looking forward to another exceptional event with great successes for the Olympic athletes.

During the Games of Torino in 2006, the Dutch team won a total of 9 medals, including 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. For DSM, Torino was primarily a Dutch customer relations event. However, like was the case in Beijing, innovation will be the central theme of our activities around the Vancouver Games and hospitality will focus on the local markets. Together with the sports federation, experts at DSM develop innovations that could make the difference between victory and defeat on the ice and in the snow of Vancouver next year.

Follow our Road to Vancouver on this website. For more information on the Innovation is our Sport™ program and activation opportunities, please contact Elvira Luykx (Corporate Communications) or Rob Meima (Innovation Center).

"It quickly became clear to me that this was going to be the most impressive and intersting travel adventure of my life. I don't know where to start to tell you what we have experienced in the few days we've been here so far. We have visited the drum towns and the conditions people have to live in are simply unimaginable."
During her trip, Sharon and her coach Joop Broens will promote her sport in areas where disabled people have little or no opportunities to engage in sports. "We ran a very busy program so far, but we now have a group of 18 potential wheelchair tennis players from Northern Nigeria who will participate in a three day clinic in Kaduna."
After her visit, she will undergo surgery to her elbow in early December. Her recovery is expected to take about two months. In early 2009 she will be 100% ready for the start of the first season on the Road to London 2012.
