Road to Vancouver

Diary Vancouver 2010

The Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver were already the 4th Games where DSM supported athletes with the development of new products and existing products. Also this time DSM worked closely together with several Dutch Olympic athletes to develop sport innovations that could lead to even better results.

A Dutch bob sleigh
When we think about the Olympic Winter Games, the average Dutch person thinks about all possible speed skating medals. However, at DSM we also think about bob sleighing. To catch up with the traditional bobsleigh countries, the TopBob-project was set up together with the Dutch Bob and Sleigh Union (BSBN). The consortium, existing of 10 partners and including DSM, worked closely together on the development of materials and parts, improving aerodynamics and steering behavior and the preparation for specific winter circumstances.

In addition to developing the bob sleigh, DSM also sponsored TeamNL, the athletes who raced the bob sleigh during the Vancouver Olympics.

Dyneema® Skin suit
The Dutch Olympic short track team competed in the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver wearing a new and innovative CRAFT one layer skin suit. The suit, which is made with Dyneema®, is lighter and more comfortable due to the fiber’s intrinsic cooling properties whilst offering for the first time, full body protection. Previously, Olympic athletes wore two layer skin suits – an under layer for protection purpose and a surface layer for aesthetic appearance. DSM has developed this one layer full body protection skis suit in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Skating Association.
