Women’s health: Addressing the health needs of women
Enhancing treatments in many specialties
At DSM, we recognize the wide spectrum of women’s health issues – and the part we can play in helping medical device manufacturers and clinicians provide better treatments. Our biomaterials are used in various applications, including as coatings on catheters used in cardiovascular and urinary procedures. Our coatings also are used on biosensors for monitoring glucose levels in diabetic patients. DSM is also exploring ways to deliver anti-infective medications to combat HIV and genital herpes as well as deliver hormone therapy for both women and girls.
Improving reproductive health
The goal of reproductive medicine is to help women deliver healthy infants while lowering their risk of pregnancy-related complications and disease transmission. Our technology plays a role in many gynecological surgeries. Caesarean sections pose distinctive challenges in wound closure due to the spongy nature of the uterus. To reduce this challenge, DSM is working with a medical device manufacturer on a polyurethane film designed to help stop bleeding quickly and strengthen closure of the fragile tissues.
We’re helping pharmaceutical companies develop methods for delivering proven contraceptives via IUDs and other implanted devices to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Contrarily, for desired pregnancies, we’re helping pharmaceutical companies refine delivery systems that can be used for in vitro fertilization.
Treating pelvic floor dysfunction
DSM engineers work closely with surgeons to develop biologic scaffolds that can aid in repairing and reinforcing the structures of the pelvic floor and in healing the soft tissue of the vaginal and rectal walls. DSM’s proprietary OPTRIX™ tissue processing technology is used to make Extracellular Matrix (ECM) products that provide a natural scaffold to reinforce the repair of the pelvic floor in pelvic organ prolapse surgery. ECM products provide an ideal environment allowing for cell infiltration and revascularization.
In addition, we can leverage our device design and manufacturing capabilities to create delivery systems and resorbable fixation components. Delivery instruments are used in combination with meshes and grafts to ensure easy and accurate delivery of the devices. Resorbable fixation components can be designed to provide reliable and durable attachment without the long-term effects of permanent fixation.
