Carbonated Apatite for orthopedic devices

Based on our proprietary osteoconductive scaffold, these unique bioceramics provide a native, textured surface that supports bone repair and formation.

  • Derived from porcine cancellous bone.
  • Removal of organic components.

Settable bone void fillers

Our calcium phosphate cements are delivered as an extrudable biomimetic putty that mimics nature’s healing ability – and can be formulated by our experts to be compatible with other biomaterials.

  • Hydrate it with bone marrow aspirate to promote enhanced remodeling.
  • Benefit from increased versatility through tunable preparation and delivery.

Application spotlight: A better bone graft substitute

How can the healthcare industry improve the lives of patients by increasing the regenerative properties of bone graft substitutes?

One example is our Carbonated Apatite material created by our experts from porcine cancellous bone. Not only does it feature a unique surface technology that maintains its natural shape to support bone repair; this unique bioceramic also offers greater design freedom.

Our Carbonated Apatite can be either mixed with our proprietary medical grade collagen; compounded with resorbable polymers; or delivered as granules. Good for our partners, great for patients.

We create sustainable healthcare solutions that deliver tangible and valuable sustainability benefits to our partners – with no compromises on safety or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are common questions that our experts get asked. Do you have a different question? Contact us

What are bioceramics from DSM Biomedical made from?

  • We can work with a variety of materials, but the most common bioceramics we offer are derived from porcine bone or synthesized from calcium salts.

Do all bioceramics perform in the same way?

  • No. Bioceramics come in many types - which are typically classified as osteoconductive, osteostimulative, and osteoinductive. The differences between these categories are based on cell-signaling ability; although controlling the physical properties of the material through a controlled process can also improve performance.

What class of clean room do you use to process your bioceramics?

  • DSM Biomedical produces bioceramics using current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in ISO Class 8 Clean Rooms. For more information, please see our Quality & Certifications.

We understand that medical product development can be a long, winding - and occasionally bumpy road. Rest assured that at DSM Biomedical, we have the proven experience, capabilities, and knowledge to support you every step of the way.

It starts with using a form-fit-function approach based on a comprehensive understanding of how the human body reacts to biomaterials following implantation. This in turn enables us to design materials that are compatible with the body’s physiology and help you develop finished products that can sustain, restore, and repair – all supported by applicable regulatory requirements.
