Automotive Sensors

DSM expertise and materials portfolio provide :

•   unique opportunities to add value in sensor manufacturing
•   proven productivity and reliability gains

What DSM offers sensor manufacturers:

•  extensive materials knowledge for sensor packaging
•  experience in conversions of metal to plastics for high performance sensors
  - Leading proven solution for engine mounted threaded sensors
•  high flow polyamides and easy flow polyesters for easy overmoulding and encapsulation with reduced risk of damage to components, better bonding and reduced process costs
•  broad portfolio of  high mechanical integrity materials to cover all packaging requirements
 - Arnite® PBT polyester for interior and position sensors capable to 120ºC  –  high dimensional stability
 - Akulon® PA6 for powertrain sensors operating to 170 ºC with peaks to 210ºC – excellent heat and chemical resistance and toughness to withstand shocks. Akulon® Ultraflow™ for reduced injection pressure and easier encapsulation compared to regular PA6 and 66
 - Stanyl® for threaded and powertrain sensors to 200 ºC with peaks to 290 ºC – very tough, creep resistant materials for secure fixing and sealing. High flow grades for easier encapsulation. Excellent resistance to ATF transmission oil at operating temperatures around 140ºC. Stanyl® uses water cooled tools; safer working for manual inlay of sensors during molding. More...

Role of Sensors

Sensors are used throughout modern passenger vehicles to provide
 - functionality
 - greater safety
 - comfort.

Sensors are packaged in plastics
 - to survive and perform as required throughout the life of the vehicle
 - to fix the sensor in position in the vehicle.
