Research and Sustainability

Our guiding principle
At DSM, the way we do business is fundamentally guided by the principle of sustainability, with the aim of creating value for all of our stakeholders in the long term. This aim requires us to manage a careful balance between economic, ecological and social interests, also referred to as the 3 Ps of People, Planet and Profit, or the 'triple bottom line'. In practice, this is a process of evolution in which harmony is sought between the company's use of natural and human resources, investment strategy, technological development and organizational change. This process is made up of a variety of changes, from incremental, short-term improvements, such as product, process and system optimizations, to broad transitions or trend discontinuities in the medium and long term, such as system innovations or technological breakthroughs.

Towards a sustainable future
The know-how available to DSM will enable us to contribute substantially towards a more sustainable world by:

  • supplying products that enable our customers and end users to improve their own contribution to sustainability and
  • using sustainable product-manufacturing processes

We aim to do this through the further integration of biology and chemistry, confirming and reinforcing our proven innovative power based on the combination and integration of our core competences and our extensive networks.

Existing examples of the contribution DSM's technology can make to sustainability include:

It is anticipated that the broad integration of chemistry, physics and biology will lead to many more breakthroughs, with the potential to improve efficiency in terms of important sustainability measures by as much as a factor of 10.
