Nutrition Labs Achieve Worker Safety and Comfort with Newest Generation of Cut-Resistant Gloves

The DSM connection

DSM Nutritional Products (DNP) and DSM Dyneema are both business groups within Royal DSM. As a world-leading supplier of vitamins, carotenoids, and other nutritional solutions, DSM Nutritional Products has three market-facing entities: Animal Nutrition & Health, Human Nutrition & Health, and Personal Care & Aroma Ingredients. In DNP’s Columbia, Maryland location, the organization has 120 employees, 70 of whom work in research in development labs, a work environment that creates some unique cut hazards.

Nitrile gloves not cutting it

Syringes are the biggest puncture threat to DNP employees working in the labs, while razors are the biggest cut hazard. In the downstream processing and analytics labs, workers also handle ultra-thin vacuum glassware that’s under pressure, creating another type of cut hazard.

Previously, DNP employees wore nitrile gloves made from a combination of latex and vinyl. These disposable gloves help protect hands from hazardous substances, but DNP wanted to take safety efforts even further by also protecting workers from cut risks. Leadership made the decision to invest in cut-resistant gloves fit for the lab setting.

A family affair

Shanta Myricks, the Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Professional at DNP, reached out to other locations to see what types of gloves they were using to protect their workers. A sister house in Switzerland used gloves made with Dyneema® and highly recommended them for such an application.

Soon after, Shanta attended the annual ASSE safety conference where DSM Dyneema was exhibiting. Shanta tried on a few sample gloves and immediately felt the difference. With the noticeable difference in comfort in mind, Shanta got in touch with DSM Dyneema licensee MCR Safety for a trial-run of cut resistant gloves made with Dyneema® Diamond Technology.

Trial and no error

Shanta ordered gloves for a trial run in the labs. “When I brought the gloves in, I didn’t have enough samples because everyone liked them so much,” Shanta recalls.

The lab employees’ favorite glove was MCR’s 9672DT2. Made with Dyneema® Diamond Technology, this glove delivers an ANSI A2 cut level, plenty sufficient for the daily hazards faced in the lab. And because the gloves are much less bulky and cumbersome than other cut-resistant gloves, workers were able to continue to perform their jobs effectively with no loss of dexterity.

Shanta’s team saw four clear benefits of switching to the cut-resistant gloves made from Dyneema®: cleanliness, breathability, dexterity, and reusability.

Gloves made with Dyneema® are fiberglass free. Additionally, Dyneema® fiber is FDA, REACH, and Oekotex approved—an important factor in the nutritional lab setting where cleanliness and the exclusion of foreign materials is critical.

In terms of breathability, the nitrile gloves used previously would sweat and stick to employees’ hands, but the new Dyneema® gloves are much cooler and more comfortable. Furthermore, the dexterity of the new gloves enables lab workers to easily grip and handle small objects without feeling constricted. “Dexterity and breathability are huge. Especially if you think about a lab setting,” Shanta reiterated. “To have cut-resistant gloves that aren’t bulky is nice.”

Last but not least, the nitrile gloves had to be thrown away after each use, while Dyneema® gloves can be worn over and over again.
