DSM Dyneema and Toyobo reach agreement to extend manufacturing joint venture
The Netherlands, 4 February 2016 - DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber, branded as Dyneema®, and world leader in life protection materials and high-performance fibers, has reached agreement with Toyobo Co.Ltd. to extend their manufacturing joint venture in Japan.
Under the terms of the agreement, DSM Dyneema will extend its ownership of the Dyneema® brand whilst Toyobo will phase out its use of the Dyneema® brand and introduce its own trademark. The agreement will also involve investment in the refurbishment and upgrading of the shared manufacturing facility located in Tsuruga City.
“We are delighted to further extend our close relationship with Toyobo, and this is a positive development for customers of both DSM Dyneema and Toyobo,” commented Golnar Motahari Pour, President at DSM Dyneema. “It creates clarity in terms of how and where the Dyneema® brand is used, and provides for long term security of supply. It is another demonstration of DSM’s continued commitment to invest in the Dyneema® brand for the benefit of all our customers and end-users worldwide”
DSM Dyneema also plans to expand its product offering through new product introductions, complementing its existing range of proprietary, high performance platforms including Dyneema® Max Technology, Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology and Dyneema® Diamond Technology.
DSM Dyneema produces its Dyneema® brand of high performance polyethylene fibers in its wholly owned facilities in the Netherlands and USA in addition to the joint venture with Toyobo in Japan. Nippon Dyneema Limited, the DSM Dyneema and Toyobo joint venture, was first established in 1991 to manufacture high-performance PE fibers for Toyobo and DSM. Toyobo branded these fibers in Japan with the Dyneema® trademark. Under the new agreement, Toyobo will be relinquishing its use of the Dyneema® trademark and introduces its own trademark for its PE fiber products.
