Electric dreams become a reality: With EcoPaXX

The SIM-CEL represents the very latest generation of electric cars. It’s innovative. It’s sustainable. And two of its key exterior components - the body panel, and a wheel arch cover - have been constructed using robust, lightweight - and bio-based - plastics from DSM.

The new SIM-CEL (Shimizu In-wheel Motor - Cool Energy Link) car contains EcoPaXX™ polyamide 410 – a high performance plastic, made 70% from tropical castor beans and certified 100% carbon neutral from cradle to gate.

Its manufacturer, the SIM-Drive Corporation of Japan, had a simple yet challenging brief: To build a car that was lighter and more sustainable…yet still delivering high performance.

Thus, the SIM-CEL prototype has a range of almost 325km on a single charge. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds. And this outstanding performance is achieved using lightweight materials and renewable energy.

A close partnership

When it came to conceiving and building the prototype, DSM did more than just provide the materials: In fact an application team worked full time on site at SIM-Drive Corporation. The result:

  • A body panel made from EcoPaXX that’s at least 50% lighter than a metal version. Furthermore, the excellent flow properties of EcoPaXX provide an excellent surface finish; while its high temperature resistance enables inline painting along with the rest of the vehicle.
  • Spats, or fender skirts - also made from EcoPaXX – that cover the rear wheel arches and help increase both the aerodynamics and aesthetics of the vehicle while lowering weight even further.
