With Somos® NeXt, you get the best of both worlds

DSM's game-changing Somos® NeXt material provides the accuracy of stereolithography with the look, feel and performance of a thermoplastic. It’s a true win-win for our customers.

Hockey blades

Somos® NeXt helps you take product design to new heights with a look and feel almost indistinguishable from finished traditional thermoplastics, but with a toughness, durability and accuracy not traditionally seen in stereolithography resins.

By using this unique 3D printing material, our customers produce a range of functional testing applications and prototypes that save significant amounts of time, money and materials.

This extremely durable stereolithography resin produces very accurate parts with high feature detail. Based on the Somos® DMX technology, Somos® NeXt is the next generation of material that facilitates the production of tough, complex parts with improved moisture resistance and greater thermal properties.

Key Benefits for 3D printing

  • Superior strength and durability
  • Exceptionally versatile
  • Thermoplastic-like performance, look and feel

Applications

Somos® NeXt helps our customers produce tougher prototype parts than those made with standard SL resins.

Our solution is especialy ideal for functional end-use performance prototypes including snap-fit designs, impellers, duct work, connectors and electronic covers, automotive housings and dashboard assemblies, packaging and sporting goods – including lacrosse sticks (see below).

Industry segments we serve with this solution include aerospace, automotive, consumer products and electronics.

Case study

“This is unlike anything we’ve seen before from stereolithography…DSM has delivered a resin that truly looks, feels and performs like a thermoplastic. We were amazed.” So says Tom Burns, product manager at Warrior Sports.

The leading American sports equipment supplier specializing in ice hockey and lacrosse wanted to find a smarter way to prototype a new lacrosse stick head. Enter its SL supplier, Eagle Design & Technology Inc, who suggested they try Somos NeXt.

The prototype was truly put through its paces, from wind tunnel testing to having lacrosse players shoot the hard rubber ball at speeds of up to 90mph. “We were able to simulate in-game scenarios of repetitive throwing and catching at high speeds where the prototype performed almost like a production head,” said Tom Burns.

Proof positive that Somos® NeXt is a game-changer. Literally…
