MT-Energie plant increases use of triticale (WCS)

Objectives

  • Increase use of triticale whole crop silage in the substrate menu to above 30%. This had been unsuccessful so far, causing reduced fluidity (i.e. too thick fermentor content) and lower conversion rates.
  • This menu change should be achieved without negatively affecting energy output of the plant.

Plant parameters

  • Substrates: corn silage (70% before enzyme use), triticale whole crop silage (30% before enzyme use), very small amounts of dry chicken manure
  • Feed rate: 4.7 kg oDM per m3 per day
  • Residence time: 74 days
  • Plant builder: MT-Energie
  • Number of reactors: 4
  • (Main) fermentor size: 2,285 m3
  • Capacity: 625 kW (CHP)

Key results

  • By using Axiase™ 100, the proportion of whole crop silage triticale in the substrate mix could be increased from 30% to 55%
  • Even with higher WCS use, viscosity improved, which led to lower electricity consumption
  • Additional 12% increase in energy production achieved
