DSM Biomedical hosts workshop on the unmet needs in the Peripheral Vascular space

06 Oct 2017

On September 14th and 15th, DSM hosted a clinical network meeting in Copenhagen focusing on the area of Peripheral Vascular Interventions.

In a workshop type setting a multidisciplinary team of DSM had an active dialogue with leading international clinicians on the unmet needs in the peripheral space. Among them, the team of specialists covered a broad range of peripheral diseases, therapies and devices, including:

  • Requirements for hemodialysis by enabling robust access to the veins via arteriovenous (AV) grafts
  • Unmet needs for chronic vein insufficiency
  • Improving safety of vascular closure devices
  • Patency improvement when performing treatments below the knee
  • Carotid artery stenting
  • Developments in imaging techniques and visualization requirements of medical devices

“The event was a great opportunity to hear thought leading physicians from other countries discuss their views on common problems we encounter in endovascular medicine.  Exposure to potential solutions proposed by accomplished materials scientists added a perspective physicians do not typically have the benefit of, and greatly enhanced the lively exchange of ideas.”
-Dr. Lindsay Machan, M.D., Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia, Interventional Radiologist at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Center

The outcome of the meeting was successful. Next to establishing an engaged clinical network, the meeting resulted in defining tangible innovation opportunities in the peripheral space, both short term as well as long term.

In addition, the team of DSM validated innovation concepts it is working on with the network, and defined a way forward to keep the dialogue active with the clinicians active.
