ASN Committee Highlights Nutrition and Health Disparities at EB2011

Drs R Perez-Escamilla and Dr O Bermudez co-chaired the ASN-Minority Affairs Committee (ASN-MARC) Symposium at EB 2011 on Health and Nutrition Disparities on Tuesday, April 12. Click here to listen to DrPerez-Escamilla’s video summary where he discusses the root of disparities.

This is the second year that the ASN-MARC has had a scientific session at EB. Dr K Lancaster and O Bermudez recently published an introduction to last year’s discussion of nutrition and health disparities at EB in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It included a paper by M Wang and C Crespi on adolescent exposure to a westernized environment on obesity in young Asians. In addition,, J Gittelsohn and M Rowan reviewed 3 case studies of intervention trials focused on reducing obesity in American Indian communities.

The following individuals, Juan Andrade (U Illinois UC), Vanessa Arias (UC Davis), Maria Carlota Dao (Tufts University), Marcus Elam (Florida State University), Ryan Grant (U Illinois UC), Jennifer Jones (U Connecticut), and Krystle Zuniga (U Illinois UC) were all winners of the 2011 ASN – Minority Access to Research Careers Award. Maria Carlota Dao, supervised by Dr Simin Meydani from Tufts USDA HNRCA, was the 2011 Award winner for Excellence in Nutrition Research and Practice for her poster "Obesity in Pregnancy Increases Hepcidin Levels".
