The automotive industry is changing shape before our eyes. Amid today’s critical climate and health pressures, ‘zero emissions’ is no longer just a concept, ultimately it’s the only way forward for car manufacturers and their suppliers. And in the meantime our solutions are reducing the emissions of  everyday vehicles across the globe.


More and more of the latest models hitting the showrooms are hybrids, combining internal combustion engines with high voltage electromotors and batteries; 100% battery powered vehicles are continuing to grow in popularity and new mobility options including connected cars and autonomous vehicles are emerging.

High performance, low impact

Together with our partners in the automotive industry we are at the heart of this transformation. We support engineers designing high performance and low environmental impact vehicles. Whether that’s a fully electrical vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell or a lithium-ion battery (LiBs), whether it runs on biofuel or hybrid technology, DSM’s solutions cover all the bases.

A key area of innovation involves electric vehicles powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which refuels in the same time it takes with a conventional car, goes further on a single tankful than the maximum range of current lithium-ion technology, and emits H2O instead of CO2.

The challenge of safely harnessing a highly explosive pressurized gas in a car is one DSM is helping leading car manufacturers solve. We’re applying our expertise in high-performance barrier and uni-directional tape materials to develop safe, effective and very lightweight hydrogen tanks from our engineering plastics1.

The road to connected cars

It’s no exaggeration to say that electrified, connected cars could be the best long-term way of achieving SDG 13 (combatting climate change and its impacts). Take ‘thinovation’ - the trend for creating smaller, lighter, greener and safer working parts in electronic devices. Today at DSM our materials are used to create components like the tiny connectors that give mobile phones their incredible functionality.

Tomorrow these same materials (and their descendants) will do a similar job in a car as we discover smart new ways to integrate electronics into plastic materials. Meeting the extreme demands of next-generation cars requires designers to re-think and re-imagine what’s possible as we see two entirely different industries (automotive and electronics) converge.

Scientific crossroads

Our work at the forefront of new mobility involves a number of DSM’s scientific competences; materials sciences help produce many of the automotive engineering thermoplastics breakthroughs, while engineering sciences cover the expertise and tools needed to develop processes for converting various renewable raw materials into products such as bio-plastics.
