DSM focuses on eyes, hearts and minds with complete omega-3 offering at Health Ingredients Europe 2012

Kaiseraugst, CH, 04 Sep 2012 12:00 CEST

Leading nutritional ingredients supplier, DSM, is showcasing its extended omega-3 capabilities at Health Ingredients Europe 2012. The company is launching life’sDHA plus EPA™, a unique, vegetarian blend of two key omega-3s – docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The product has the nutritional profile of fish oil formula and delivers numerous benefits for eye, heart and brain health. To date, DSM is the only supplier to be able to provide this unique blend in the European market after receiving novel food authorization in the EU in July 2012.

The extension to its algal based portfolio follows DSM’s acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada. Through its class-leading range of marine bio-lipids, DSM has strengthened and complemented its recently established global Nutritional Lipids platform - growing its position in the North American and Europe dietary supplement market by adding fish-oil derived omega-3 fatty acids to its portfolio and leveraging its forms, encapsulation and emulsification technologies to expand its range of applications and products.

Will Black, director of marketing for human nutrition and health at DSM Nutritional Products, comments: “The global omega-3 market is growing at an impressive rate and DSM is at the forefront of innovation in this key area. life’sDHA plus EPA and the acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada are just two examples of our commitment to helping manufacturers create market-winning products that meet the diverse nutritional requirements of modern consumers. With our strong applications expertise and expanded capabilities and portfolio, we’re excited about the new opportunities we can now offer to our customers.”

DSM will also be highlighting a number of other nutritional ingredients on stand, including Tolerase™ L, an acid lactase that helps to digest lactose to reduce lactose intolerance discomfort and increase the quality of life of consumers with lactose intolerance or malabsorption.

Also on stand at this year’s show will be DSM’s ever-expanding range of Health Benefit Solutions. From heart and eye health to nutrition for vegetarians, men and the mind, these nutrient solutions are aligned with key consumer health concerns and are backed by science. Visitors to this year’s show will be able to explore the Health Benefit Solutions through a number of interactive exercises on touch screens including a vitamin intake test. After assessing their requirements, a range of nutrient-packed food and beverage samples will be available for those requiring a nutritional boost.

DSM is sharing its insight at the show’s supplier seminar and the prestigious HiE conference. At 09:40 on the 13th November, DSM’s Dr. Cindy Gerhardt will share insight on developing new ingredients for improved digestion and gut health (module 1B) and at 13:40, Dr. Rob Winwood, DSM’s scientific communications manager for life’sDHA will speak about alternatives to fish-based omega-3s (module 3B). Professor Peter Weber, one of DSM’s corporate scientists, will wrap up the day’s activity with his presentation ‘micronutrient deficiency in Western populations – are we getting enough?’ in the Seminar Session Theatre at 15:30.

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of vitamins. In 1912 Casimir Funk coined the term to describe bioactive substances essential for human and animal health. On the first and second day of the show at 16:00, DSM will be celebrating this important milestone with an on-stand happy hour.
