DSM Science and Technology Award Asia 2013 for Li Songtao
Li Songtao received the award for his PhD research titled ‘The effect of calcium supplementation on the endogenous cholesterol metabolism in estrogen deficiency’, which he concluded under the supervision of Professor Sun Changhao at the Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene of the Harbin Medical University. An international judging committee selected Li as winner out of four nominated PhD scientists.
The award was presented by Dr. Manfred Eggersdorfer, Senior Vice President Nutrition Science & Advocacy of DSM during the 11th National Conference of the Chinese Nutrition Society on 17 May 2013 in Hangzhou (CN).
The jury indicated that Li demonstrated a very good integration of human research and data from animal models, as well as a good integration of molecular biology and epidemiology. Furthermore the jury was impressed by Li's presentation skills in addressing a complex, yet very important issue of human nutrition. They judged his results to be very relevant for public health.
Nominees and second prize winners were:
- Zong Geng, Institute of Nutritional Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. PhD Supervisor: Professor Lin Xu.
PhD thesis subject: The associations between fatty acid biomarkers and metabolic disorders in the Chinese population.
- Zou Zhiyong, Peking University. PhD Supervisor: Professor Lin Xiaoming.
PhD thesis subject: The molecular mechanism of the protection of lutein against atherosclerosis and the oxidative damage of vascular endothelial cells.
- Zhang Meilin, Tianjin Medical University. Professor Huang Guowei.PhD thesis subject: The effects of dietary factors on hyperuricemia and the metabolic syndrome.
The award was held for the first time in China in partnership with the Chinese Nutrition Society. The nominations were focused on innovative research – fundamental or applied – in the human nutrition science field. From the total number of nominations received, four candidates were selected for the final judging round. These four candidates have presented their research in a short lecture during a special CNS-DSM Award Symposium held at the conference in Hangzhou on 15 May 2013.
“We feel honored to present China’s first DSM Science and Technology Award in cooperation with the CNS,” said Jack Chen, Director of China Research Center, DSM Nutritional Products, who co-chaired the symposium. “As a global thought leader in nutrition, this is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening our efforts in scientific research, especially in human nutrition, by cultivating more local talent in this field.”
“We are glad to organize such an award in cooperation with DSM, and it is the first of its kind in the Chinese nutritional science field,” said Prof. Yang Yuexin, President-elect of CNS and also the symposium host. “Through this event, we have tapped top talent in this field who can contribute to China’s nutrition science achievements and the health of human beings.”
The DSM Science & Technology Awards are part of the DSM Bright Science Awards Program. They seek to recognize and reward outstanding young researchers (PhD students and those who have recently obtained their PhD) for innovative research with clear application potential. The award is granted in three different regions: Europe, the Americas and Asia. The award events are organized in cooperation with major scientific conferences in these regions.
