DSM this week announced Rob Crowell has been named Business Unit Director of its Functional Materials business, effective 1 September. Crowell will be responsible for overseeing the operations and performance of the entire business unit, which encompasses fiber optic coating technologies; stereolithography resins - a distinct and unique technology within additive manufacturing/3D printing; high-performance floor coatings and other areas, with facilities in Elgin, Ill., Stanley, N.C., Hoek van Holland, the Netherlands, and Shanghai, China. Crowell succeeds Henk Jan Koenen, who will move into a leadership position within DSM Corporate Human Resources.

"I am very pleased that Rob will continue the strong tradition of thought leadership and innovation we’ve established at DSM Functional Materials during the past seven years," said Koenen, the current Business Unit Director. "He offers a depth of experience, industry knowledge and technical expertise that will help strengthen Functional Material’s core businesses and ensure a seamless transition of stewardship for our customers and employees."

Crowell has been with DSM for 24 years and with the Functional Materials Business Unit for six years, most recently serving as Senior Business Director, where he oversaw the commercial businesses for DFM. Prior to that position, he served as Vice President of Fiber Optic Materials and Vice President Marketing & Sales for DSM Engineering Plastics. Also, for the past six years Crowell has served as a board member for Japan Fine Coatings Company, a 50-50 joint venture between DSM Functional Materials and JSR Corporation.

Crowell holds a juris doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison. He is based at DSM’s Elgin, Ill., facility.
