DSM wins ‘Breakthrough Technology of the Year’
The award recognizes a breakthrough technology platform “for the technology that reset the goal for bio-based production.” Green Power announced the honor, which focuses on sustainability criteria throughout the bio-based value chain, during its Sustainable Bio Awards, presented at the World Bio Markets 2014 conference in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
“In this highly technically competent industry, we’re honored to be recognized for this achievement,” said Anton Robek, President of DSM’s Bio-based Products & Services organization. “The progress we’re made with our advanced cellulosic yeast product is a major step toward widespread commercialization of cellulosic bio-ethanol and a huge step in moving our world toward a more renewable and sustainable future. Cellulosic bio-ethanol is ready to drastically expand our world’s sources for fuel, and we’re excited to be a part of it.”
DSM’s advanced cellulosic yeast product recently achieved successful scale-up in an industrial production-sized trial at DONG Energy’s Inbicon demonstration plant in Kalundborg, Denmark. The two-month, 270,000-liter production run converted C6 and C5 sugars, yielding 40-percent more ethanol per ton of biomass than traditional C6 fermentation. As importantly, the trial proved DSM’s ability to provide its advanced cellulosic yeast to customers in a successful supply chain framework to allow continuous conversion at production volumes.
DSM is the first company involved with cellulosic conversion technology to have obtained the required permits, notifications and qualifications for its customers to be able to utilize this advanced cellulosic yeast technology in their processes in Europe, the U.S. and Brazil. The company has established a world-class stable and high-quality production and supply process for its unique yeast product that is moving cellulosic ethanol production from dream to reality. Working with world-class partners such as POET, GranBio and Inbicon, DSM is now taking giant steps in moving the world toward a more renewable, sustainable future.
