Royal DSM, a global science-based company active in Nutrition, Health and Sustainable Living, outlines innovative and scalable solutions to meet the rising demand for sustainable animal protein at DSM’s Sustainability Forum held in Tokyo, Japan.
DSM highlights that by 2050, the world’s population is projected to reach 9.6 billion and global demand for livestock is projected to increase by 70%1. Today, the livestock industry is the world’s largest user of agricultural land through grazing and the use of feed crop. It contributes to 14.5% of human induced Greenhouse gas emissions2, and as such, plays a major role in climate change, land, water and biodiversity.
In Japan, this is evidenced by the projected increase in production of poultry from 1,570kt in 2017 to 1,628kt in 20273. The continuous strong growth in production of animal protein, places pressures on the finite resources in Japan.
This calls for increased advocacy and collaboration for an integrated approach to sustainable food value chains through private and public partnerships. At the forum, attended by industry experts, Governments and Japan’s business community; DSM reinforces the importance of producing and consuming within our planetary boundaries by applying new thinking, new technologies, and new business models to create a more sustainable industry.

DSM recently launched RONOZYME® ProAct, an innovative solution that maximizes the digestibility of protein across a range of feed ingredients in Japan. Protein is an essential macronutrient needed for growth in animals and the incorporation of the product reduces feed costs and protects the environment by reducing nitrogen excretion from the animal.
Sustainability across the entire food value chain, from efficient feed production to meeting consumer’s expectations, will enhance the industry’s contribution towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)4.
